The Netherlands is served by several major airports, with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) being the primary international hub, offering direct flights from numerous countries worldwide.
Amsterdam is a key hub for air travel in Europe, meaning if you’re exploring the continent, chances are you’ll pass through Schiphol at some point during your journey.
Schiphol handles a wide range of international and domestic flights, while smaller airports like Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) and Eindhoven Airport (EIN) primarily cater to budget airlines and regional destinations. Additionally, Groningen Airport (GRQ) and Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) provide convenient access to other parts of the Netherlands, mainly via domestic or short-haul flights.

The Netherlands is a generally safe destination for travelers, boasting a low violent crime rate and ranking as one of the safest countries in the world. Having explored numerous regions of the country, I’ve encountered minimal instances of crime during my travels.
That said, the primary safety concerns in the Netherlands are bicycle accidents, especially in busy cities, and weather-related risks, such as sudden rain or strong winds. To stay protected, it’s essential to follow traffic rules, wear a helmet when cycling, and always carry a rain jacket or umbrella. By taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy a safe and memorable trip to this beautiful country.

The Netherlands enjoys a temperate maritime climate, meaning mild temperatures and variable weather throughout the year. The country experiences four distinct seasons: spring (March to May), summer (June to August), autumn (September to November), and winter (December to February). Rain is possible year-round, but the wettest months are typically October and November, while the sunniest period is usually during the summer months of June to August.
Traveling during the rainy season is still a great option, but it’s wise to plan for a few extra days as a buffer in case of unpredictable weather. This way, you can make the most of your trip, rain or shine!

The Netherlands is a moderately priced destination, offering a range of accommodations and dining options to suit different budgets. Hostels and budget hotels start as low as €20-€30 per night, while mid-range hotels typically range from €80-€150. Meals can vary in cost, with affordable options like street food or casual cafes starting at around €5-€10, and restaurant dining averaging €15-€30 per person.
For getting around, transportation options include renting a bicycle, which is a popular and eco-friendly way to explore, or using the efficient public transit system of trains, trams, and buses. Renting a car is also an option, though parking can be expensive in cities. Ride-sharing apps like Uber are not widely available, but local taxi services and apps like Bolt can be used, though they tend to be pricier than public transport. Despite these costs, the Netherlands remains a manageable and rewarding travel destination for all types of travelers.
